About
In the summer of 2023 nearabout my 60th year on this particular planet I decided to make hats again – specifically Top Hats – Top Hats with a little something to say… I admire those that channel their objection to the status quo into art – the poets and painters – the storytellers. I may not be Banksy but I still have something to say!
I have been doing much musing on the state of the patriarchy in the last few years and took myself on a self directed ‘howzywhathefuckhappened’ journey. It just made sense to use top hats as my muse.
If ‘once upon a time’ you did something that you loved but for whatever reason gave it up – then hear this. It’s not too late to give it another shot!
It had been 20 plus years since my millinery chops had a workout so I set about brushing the dust off! I hauled my wooden blocks, books, and boxes of buttons and bows out of storage and reacquainted myself with the tools of the trade. It really was just like riding a bike!

Top Hats
Top Hats – as intrinsically powerful as they are feminine – have you ever noticed they are hourglass in shape? They are also not in fashion which is such a relief – if you aren’t ‘in’ you don’t have to fret about being ‘out’ – the difference between fashion and STYLE!
Sartorial Subversion
Having sartorial style and wanting the patriarchy to go fuck itself don’t have to be mutually exclusive! The Top Hats I create tell a story – some quietly – some screaming from the bell tower – pick your volume and enjoy!
Hand Made
The more AI infiltrates our world – the more I appreciate things made by hands and minds working as a team! AI has its uses but ‘stay in your lane’ we already have artists, designers and makers!
It’s a Process
I love the transformational quality of ‘creation’. Fleece is spun into yarn, plants into thread, and both made into fabric and garments. Magical!
Another important ingredient is TIME – the time to actually create the ‘thing’ and ALL the time it took you to get to a place where you know how to create the ‘thing’.
Contact
If you happen to be in the West Kootenays I would love to see you, and will be happy to give you directions. ‘go over bridge – turn left at the squirrel and right at the moose’
